Brian Dettmer

Today while surfing the web in between classes I found myself flipping through a slide show of sculptures so unique, and so intricate, my brain didn't really know how to take it all in. So with that I am sharing a few pieces of Brian Dettmer's work with you. Click Here for a link to his website.

Here is a wonderfully written excerpt from his website explaining how he creates these beautiful pieces of art:

"In this work I begin with an existing book and seal its edges, creating an enclosed vessel full of unearthed potential. I cut into the surface of the book and dissect through it from the front. I work with knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time, exposing each layer while cutting around ideas and images of interest. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception."

Fashion Friday: Marilyn Monroe Edition

"Everyone's a star and deserves the right to twinkle"

Recently there has been so much Marilyn and I just can't get enough. I am especially excited for the show Smash to start, it is about creating a Marilyn Monroe Musical, and it is fantastic. Follow the link on the bottom to get a sneak peak of the series which I am LOVING, and by sneak peak, they mean the entire first episode. Or you can just wait for it to play on TV in a few weeks.
Marilyn is witty, smart and so super sexy! Her beauty is timeless!

Watch SMASH on Hulu!

Sofa Hunting

When I moved in to my apartment I was blessed with a free second-hand sofa. It's big, comfy and a little bit...dated. For the last 2 years a well fitted slipcover has done the trick but my slip cover patience is wearing rather thin. You can buy the best slip cover in the world and you will still have to tug, tuck and adjust it every other time you sit on it. It's time to put my tax return money towards a good cause and invest in a new couch. My requirements: comfort and tufting. Here are a few that I've been looking at.

This one from West Elm is my favorite so far. I'm drawn to it in dandelion or lagoon, an amazing shade of blue, but my practical mother says I should go for something a bit more neutral due to the fact that I am changing around my apartment so often. She's probably right.

This one from World Market.  It isn't tufted, but it is affordable and has pretty lines.
This handsome splurge from Anthropologie. He will not be coming home with me but makes for good inspiration. Check it out in chartreuse! I looooove it.

Fashion Friday: Etta James Edition

Today is a sad day for the fantastic Etta James has passed on, but her legend will live forever. She was known for her blond hair and unmatchable voice. She opened up the world of blues for women, and for controversial issues.

My mother always wanted me to be glamorous.

One Week to a New Closet

So yesterday the bar in my closet finally took its inevitable tumble. Honestly, I and anyone who has ever seen the bowing bar in my closet was surprised that it had lasted this long without breaking. Here is the damage...
I think that shelf up above might be next.

I had already been sorting and organizing my closet all night when, much to my surprise, this was the image that came up when I visited one of my regular blog reads, Ruche.
Go here for the details: http://bit.ly/vZHjl5
Hopefully I will have a clean, organized and structurally sound closet by the end of the week. I will be sure to share the results when I'm all done.

Craft Night: Soap

There is  nothing like some good clean fun! Pun very much intended. These are actually pictures from a craft night we had nearly a year ago, but it was a fun and easy project so I decided to share.
The only supply I didn't already have at home was the glycerin. The soaps were made out of citrus zest, berries and herbs from my mom's garden and my refrigerator. Follow this link to learn how.

Fashion Friday: The Girl With the Pearl Earring Edition

Today's outfit is inspired by this  work of art titled The Girl With the Pearl Earring created by Johannes Vermeer in 1665, outfit complete with earings and scarf (just not wrapped around the head).

Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

All Stars

While many of you may not care even the slightest, I am overjoyed that Project Runway All Stars premiered last week on Lifetime.
I'm rooting for this pint-sized cutie from season 8, Mondo Guerra. I have to share some pictures of him and his designs because I'm a tiny bit obsessed. He rocks short shorts, bow ties, knee highs, suspenders, boots and amazing hats and hair styles all the time. I just can't keep my eyes off of him. His designs are full of color, pattern and texture and if I could get my hands on some of his looks I would totally wear them to Safeway (you know what I mean mom).

Fashion Friday: Star Wars Edition

Recently Kierra and I have been watching all the Star Wars movies and I was absolutely captivated by the clothing, specifically Padme's outfits. They were crazy, and made me wish I could dress as crazy amazing as her, but instead I will settle for something a little more subtle, and well, practical, and with a pop of red.

May the Force be with you!
